What is a deepfake?

Also called: deepfakes, AI voice clone

A deepfake is a fake video, image or audio clip made with AI to look or sound like a real person saying or doing something they never did. Voice clones can be made from a short clip, which is why AI-powered phone scams are rising.

How does a deepfake work?

Generative models learn a person's face or voice from existing recordings and then produce new content in their likeness.

Why does a deepfake matter?

Deepfakes are used for scams, misinformation and harassment. Simple habits, like calling back on a known number, defeat most deepfake scams.

An example

Example: A caller using a cloned voice of a relative urgently asks for ₹20,000. Calling the relative back on their saved number exposes the scam.
