What is computer vision?

Computer vision is the field of AI that lets computers understand images and video, such as recognising faces, reading text, detecting objects or spotting defects. Most modern computer vision uses deep learning trained on large sets of labelled images.

How does computer vision work?

A model learns visual patterns from many labelled images, building up from edges and textures to whole objects, and then applies them to new pictures or camera feeds.

Why does computer vision matter?

It powers face unlock, document scanning, medical imaging and quality checks in factories.

An example

Example: When an app scans your Aadhaar or PAN card and fills in the details, computer vision is reading the text from the photo.
