What is temperature in AI?

Also called: temperature setting

Temperature is a setting that controls how random an AI model's output is. Low temperature makes answers more predictable and consistent; high temperature makes them more varied and creative, but also more likely to drift or make mistakes.

How does temperature work?

When choosing the next token, the model has probabilities for many options. Low temperature strongly favours the most likely ones; high temperature gives less likely options more of a chance.

Why does temperature matter?

Developers set temperature low for tasks needing consistency, like data extraction or grading, and higher for brainstorming.

An example

Example: Generating ten taglines for a chai brand works better at a higher temperature; pulling GST numbers from invoices needs a low one.
